21 of 365! My first experience with making hummus = major failure!
I bought a bag of dried chickpeas so I let them soak overnight with the intention of boiling them today.
This is tedious. After sorting and washing till the water was clear, then soaking them overnight then rinsing them again and then having to slow simmer them for almost an hour. I suggest buying them in a can.
After soaking overnight the chickpeas double in size and I boiled them until I could easily mash one between my fingers.
Here are some of the ingredients I will be adding to the mixture; peanut butter, lime juice, one clove of garlic, olive oil and water.
I quickly realized that a normal blender is not capable of blending such a thick mixture. I even got desperate and used the hand mixer. At best, I could put a small amount of chickpeas in the blender with water but then it was still clumping around the blade.
I tried a sample, tried adding more peanut butter and it still tasted bad. Gritty and bad. Not to mention giant clumps from all the unblended chickpeas. If you don't have a food processor I don't suggest making this.
Now to wash all the tools I had dirtied in the kitchen!
Conclusion: Chick peas don't smell good, they don't taste good and they don't taste good masked in peanut butter either.
But I didn't walk away completely empty handed. I still had pita bread and peanut butter! I'll let Jif do the work from now on. ;)
